Lilian Holt studied at the Putney Art School and was a founding member of the Borough Group, a collective of painters influenced by her husband, David Bomberg (1890-1957)

‘spirit in the mass’ emphasised the group’s philosophy ever since the Third Exhibition of the Borough Group and can be seen in all the work in our exhibition.

Having accompanied her first husband Jacob Mendelson on his business engagements with artists in the late 20's, Holt refined her ability to critically assess and inform art production enabling her to think and paint as both an artist and a gallerist.

In March 2025 Brooke-Walder Gallery held the first retrospective of Lilian Holt's work in her own name coming out of the shadow of her husband.
