Duncan Grant (1885–1978) was a British painter and designer, best known for his role as a leading member of the Bloomsbury Group and his contributions to modernist art in Britain. Born in Edinburgh, he studied at the Edinburgh School of Art and the Westminster School of Art, developing a distinctive style influenced by Post-Impressionism and the French avant-garde.
Grant worked across painting, textile and interior design, and decorative arts, creating vibrant murals, fabrics, and portraits. He was closely associated with fellow Bloomsbury artists such as Vanessa Bell and Roger Fry, and his work often blended bold colour, formal experimentation, and a sensibility for harmony in design.
He also contributed to the Omega Workshops, a collaborative studio that produced modern decorative arts, and remained an influential teacher and mentor. Today, Duncan Grant is celebrated as a major figure in British modernism, admired for his versatility, decorative innovation, and role in the cultural life of the Bloomsbury circle.
