This early print of a Jewish religious figure shows Kramer experimenting with etching. In
using the most convenient and available models early in his artistic career, he made
numerous images of older Jewish characters and local beggars who frequented his
home neighbourhood, The Leylands, an area of poor quality workers’ housing, in Leeds.
This exact print, from an unspecified edition, was shown in the ‘Jacob Kramer’
retrospective held at Leeds City Art Gallery from 8 September – 9 October 1960, as
catalogue number 186, as the label verso confirms. The exhibition, with almost 200
exhibits, celebrated Kramer’s role as Leeds’ most prominent 20 th century artist and
displayed a dozen prints, embracing etching and lithography.
