Most likely to be an elegant Leeds sitter, this oil may be Lady in a Black Hat c. 1922
which was shown at Kramer’s solo exhibition at the Leger Gallery in London in 1935 and
in the 1960 retrospective, Jacob Kramer, held at Leeds City Art Gallery, where it was lent
by Mrs Eunice Standish Taylor from the collection of her late husband, Edward Standish.
Characteristic of Kramer’s portraits of Leeds notables, the features of his striking sitter
are presented in simplified form, the dark tones of her outfit merging with the
unmodulated setting in which she poses – the red of her lipstick drawing the eye and
providing a focus at the very centre of the painting.
